Two of Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora’s biggest foes have filed petitions to run against him in November’s election; Council President Kathy McBride and West Ward Councilwoman Robin Vaughn are throwing their hats into the race. Both council members are frequent thorns in the mayor’s side, voting to block or upend many of his initiatives. They were most recently no-shows to a special meeting the mayor called to fill the vacant seat of ex-At-Large Councilman Santiago Rodriguez, forcing the meeting to end without a quorum.

Vaughn is a controversial figure, who has publicly made homophobic and bigoted slurs. The council is locked in bitter disputes over approving budgets and other programming for the city. At least 27 candidates have taken out petitions to run for office, including in the mayor’s race.
