Up to three inches of rain is expected to fall Tuesday throughout New Jersey and all 21 counties are under a flood watch, according to the National Weather Service, with the risk of flash flooding lingering well into the evening for central and South Jersey. Forecasters say flooding is most likely in urban areas and areas with poor drainage. Excessive runoff may cause rivers and streams to overspill their banks. Downpours brought 1.5 inches of rain Monday night.
Less than a week ago, the state was looking at a much different scenario at the end of an unusually dry summer and with 15 counties experiencing severe drought. The National Weather Service is forecasting sunnier skies and drier weather by the end of the week.
