The New Jersey Department of Health has announced the first probable case of monkeypox in the state. Health officials say on June 18 a resident tested positive for orthopoxvirus, a virus associated with monkeypox. That individual is isolating at home while local health departments contact trace to find anyone who may have been exposed.
A test to confirm the monkeypox virus will be done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Department of Health says the risk to New Jerseyans from monkeypox remains low.
