Advocates for New Jersey’s offshore wind industry say climate change is happening rapidly with dire consequences but that development of the state’s approved wind farms seems to have stalled.

Environmentalists and offshore wind advocates, led by former state Senate President Steve Sweeney, rallied in Long Branch on Saturday to urge wind companies and state regulators to work faster in standing up the industry. State authorities have said companies like Ørsted are slow-walking their work as negotiations play out over tax incentives for the wind projects. Joseph Fiordaliso, president of the Board of Public Utilities, said, “I’m issuing a recommendation to those developers: put your nose to the grindstone and let’s get this going again.”

Offshore wind developers say costs have risen due to inflation, higher interest rates and supply chain issues.
