Congress last month passed the Speak Out Act, legislation that voids nondisclosure agreements in situations where employees allege workplace sexual harassment or assault. The bill, which President Joe Biden is expected to sign, aims to make it easier for victims to speak out against their harassers without fearing backlash from their employer.
The measure is a product of the #MeToo movement and was pushed by the advocacy group Lift Our Voices, which was co-founded by New Jersey-based political consultant Julie Roginsky, who had to navigate NDA-related issues of her own during the Katie Brennan scandal. In an interview with NJ Spotlight News, Roginsky discusses the Speak Out Act and reflects on the circumstances that led her to lobby for the bill’s passage.
Gov. Phil Murphy’s office declined to comment on how nondisclosure agreements were used during his first campaign for office.
