The CROWN Act aims to protect people of color from discrimination if they choose to wear their hair in its natural state. The bill had been moving through Congress after being passed by the House this year, but it was blocked in the Senate this week by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky).
A state version of the measure is law in New Jersey, and Assemblywoman Angela McKnight (D-Hudson), who led that bill through the State House, said Paul’s move is a blow to civil rights around the country.
