“We can see a light at the end of the tunnel,” one transit advocate said as organizers filed for federal funding that’s expected to help build a new train tunnel under the Hudson River as part of the $12.3 billion Gateway Project. In a letter, organizers on Friday asked the federal government for some $5.6 billion and promised local matching funds to get the effort back on track.

Although the political outlook for the project has improved, it could take more than a decade before the new tunnel is finished. Meanwhile, rail riders depending on the old tunnel still won’t be able to count on reliable service between New Jersey and New York.
