Advisers to the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that popular over-the-counter nasal decongestants do no work. The advisory panel said phenylephrine, the main ingredient in products like Sudafed, Allegra, DayQuil and Benadryl Allergy, is not effective.

Brian Pinto, the owner and pharmacist at Tiffany Natural Pharmacy in Westfield, said in an interview with NJ Spotlight News, “It had been on the horizon for a little bit … So not necessarily a surprise.” And, he said, “There are other alternatives.”
