The board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Wednesday unanimously approved fare increases for subways and buses in New York City. Fare hikes had been paused during the COVID-19 pandemic when the MTA dealt with losses from low ridership. A subway ride will cost $2.90 from Aug. 20 when the increases go into effect.
The new fares are seen as an attempt to combat losses from fare evaders, which amounted to $690 million last year. The prices for commuter railroads and tolls will also increase.
