Authorities have arrested a man and charged him with murdering Sayreville Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour.
John Wisniewski, the attorney for the family of the slain councilwoman, said, the family has “been praying that there is some breakthrough in this case, and their prayers were answered.”
The suspect is 28-year-old Rashid Ali Bynum, a Virginia native who was arrested in the commonwealth Monday morning. He’s awaiting extradition to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Facility before a pre-trial detention hearing in the Superior Court of New Jersey. Bynum is accused of shooting Dwumfour multiple times outside her home on Feb. 1.
The prosecutor’s office says it can prove that Bynum was in Dwumfour’s neighborhood just before and just after the shooting, using a combination of video surveillance, eyewitness testimony and cellphone data. It’s likely that Bynum and Dwumfour knew each other because Bynum was listed as a contact in Dwumfour’s phone, which was recovered from the crime scene.
