The family of Carl Dorsey, a man shot and killed last year by a Newark police officer, is suing the Newark Police Department and the city. The lawsuit accuses the city and police department of excessive force and violating the state’s Civil Rights Act. Police say officers responded to a call, which resulted in Detective Rod Simpkins fatally shooting Dorsey.

A spokesperson from the attorney general’s office, which investigates all police shootings in New Jersey, confirms an investigation into the incident is ongoing and no further information will be released at this time. The family says it hasn’t received any updates on the investigation. We reached out to the city of Newark for comment but have not heard back yet.
