An armed revolt in Russia, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the notorious Wagner military group, created chaos in Moscow over the weekend. Prigozhin, a former ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, seized control of the strategic city of Rostov-on-Don and sent his convoy to within a hundred miles of Moscow.

In an interview with NJ Spotlight News, Alain Sanders, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Saint Peter’s University, analyzes the impact of the revolt in Russia and worldwide. “What’s clear is that the Russian military really didn’t respond very well to what we’ve observed,” said Sanders, who added that, “Certainly it will have effects in Ukraine. I mean, the Ukrainians are saying they’re taking advantage of what they perceive to be the chaos in Russia.”

Sander said it’s not known how destabilized Russia is by the weekend’s turmoil, “but a completely destabilized Russia would be a huge problem for the United States and for all other countries because Russia is a nuclear power.”
