The Environmental Protection Agency approved a plan on Monday to deal with toxic mud in the Passaic River between Garfield and Belleville. It will happen in tandem with the already planned cleanup of 8.3 miles at the end of the river, from Belleville to Newark Bay.
EPA Deputy Administrator Janet McCabe, announcing the initiative, said, “the river is polluted with over 100 chemicals including dioxin, PCBs, mercury, copper, lead and pesticides — really the greatest hits of environmental contamination.” But cleanup could still be years away.
