The baby formula manufacturer at the center of a nationwide recall says it has reached an agreement with the Food and Drug Administration to fix issues at Abbott Nutrition’s Michigan factory, which shut down for more than three months, contributing to the massive baby formula shortage. If a court approves the agreement, Abbott says it could restart the site within two weeks, but it will likely take up to two months to get products back on shelves. As parents frantically scramble to find ways to get their babies fed, Nestle also said Tuesday it is rushing its baby formula produced outside the U.S. via air freight to help fill the gap.
Meanwhile, House Democrats on Tuesday proposed a $28 million emergency funding bill to address the shortage. It’s an unnerving hurdle for parents who’ve already been saddled with the burdens of the pandemic and are now struggling to provide the most basic of needs.
