It’s been two years since Sen. Ed Durr shocked New Jersey politics by upsetting former state Senate President Steve Sweeney in District 3. Now the question: Can he keep the seat in the South Jersey district?
This year, Durr is facing a stiff challenge from John Burzichelli, the former Paulsboro mayor who represented the district as an assemblyman alongside Sweeney for 16 years. Burzichelli lost that seat in the same red wave that Durr rode to victory.
District 3 is made up of all of Salem County, plus parts of Gloucester and Cumberland counties. Democrats have a numbers advantage over Republicans in terms of voter registration, but more than a third of voters are independent.
