It’s been seven years since Shoal Harbor in Middletown was last dredged, and boaters are worried they’ll damage their boats and their livelihoods if they run onto the sand shoals collecting under the water. Announcing federal funding of $8 million to dredge the Shoal Harbor navigation channel, Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6th) said last week that bids for the project could come as soon as September and work should start early next year.

Richard Isaksen, president of the Belford Seafood Cooperative, said, “I worry about running aground in the channel in nasty weather. If you get nasty weather, you run aground, you could be in serious problems.”
