Downed overhead wires caused New Jersey Transit to suspend service to and from New York City on the heavily traveled Northeast Corridor, New Jersey Coast and Raritan Valley lines Wednesday evening, stranding hundreds of riders. Passengers scrambled to find alternative transportation.

The disruptions continued Thursday morning as Amtrak, which owns and operates the rail lines, was still working to fix the problem. NJ Transit sent an alert for riders to “expect possible delays and cancellations today due to residual impacts resulting from crew availability and equipment that was out of position…”

The service disruptions come just weeks before NJ Transit is set to raise fares by 15%.

Gov. Phil Murphy on Thursday sent a letter to Amtrak calling the event a “disaster” and requesting that senior teams meet “immediately” to work on the next steps.
