GameStop stock soared this week after individual investors began buying up its shares and used the social media platform Reddit to urge others to buy stock in the video game retailer. This was going on even as big-money Wall Street investors were betting GameStop stock would fall.

Essentially, it’s a case of individual traders trying to outsmart the Wall Street experts, according to Rutgers-Camden Associate Professor Nathan Fong.
