Firefighters have largely contained a major wildfire in North Jersey that had threatened homes and closed a road in Rockaway Township in Morris County.
The Craigmeur Lookout Wildfire, covering 202 acres, was 85% contained as of Sunday evening, officials said.
The blaze sparked on Halloween and quickly became dangerous, threatening more than a dozen buildings and causing multiple homes to be evacuated. Firefighters were able to prevent any injuries or any damage to buildings.
Danger remains high to start this week. In South Jersey, where extreme fire risk remains, a wildfire in Downe Township is now 90% under control after burning through 137 acres. Meanwhile, a significant fire that sparked today in Waterford Township is sending smoke into Camden County towns.
The rash of fires come as New Jersey continues an unprecedented dry spell, with virtually no rainfall in all of October. September and October combined have been New Jersey’s driest consecutive months since record keeping began in 1895.
