New Jersey is one of the most diverse states in the nation, but its schools are some of the most highly segregated. At the heart of the argument in a long-delayed lawsuit is the harm to students of color who attend separate and unequal schools in New Jersey based on their ZIP codes. The case proceeded on Thursday, when attorneys for the plaintiffs and the state presented their arguments in Mercer County Superior Court.

If the lawsuit is successful, New Jersey could see major changes in where students attend school. Chalkbeat Newark reporter Patrick Wall has been following the hearing.
