The Assembly voted last month to advance a new gun control bill but only after a long, intense and bitter debate on the chamber floor. Assemblyman Brian Bergen (R-Morris) used an expletive — caught on microphone — when referring to bill sponsor Assemblyman Joe Danielson (D-Middlesex).

The incident was an example of what Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin calls increasingly pointed and personal attacks in State House business. Coughlin says he’s had enough and is urging his colleagues to restore civility in Trenton.
