More than 12,000 recreational cannabis customers bought products on April 21, the first day of legal sales in New Jersey. They spent just shy of $2 million, according to the state Cannabis Regulatory Commission. But several mayors and lawmakers are getting behind an effort to bar cannabis use for off-duty police officers.

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop threatened termination of officers who consume cannabis off-duty, saying the liability issue could be enormous. Sen. Paul Sarlo (D-Bergen) tweeted that police would subject themselves to never-ending lawsuits and questioning of their judgment. One lawmaker is said to be readying a bill on the issue, but Senate President Nick Scutari said he won’t post a bill that singles out police, or anyone, for consuming cannabis when off duty.
