State health commissioner Judy Persichilli said Monday the department’s predictive models show caseloads of COVID-19 are likely to hit about 1,000 a day in New Jersey during the latest surge of infection. That includes among kids, especially those age 12 and under who aren’t yet eligible for vaccination against the disease. Roughly 94,000 children were diagnosed with COVID-19 last week alone, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, accounting for about 15% of the nation’s newly reported cases.

As researchers race to understand why an increasing number of children are developing long-haul COVID-19 symptoms, we turn to Dr. Meg Fisher, pediatric infectious disease specialist and special adviser to the commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Health.
