Staff members and volunteers worked hard to help more than 1,000 clients in the aftermath of a fire Sunday night that destroyed the only food pantry in northern Hunterdon County. The fire, which started at a neighboring Walgreens, destroyed the Open Cupboard Food Pantry in Clinton, which serves more than 8,000 clients a year.

“Everybody has reached out,” said Jennifer Tavormina, executive director of the food pantry. “It’s more than I could have ever imagined. It has made this week so much better than it could have been.”

Tavormina said clients will now get meals from the pantry’s Warren County location, or from the Flemington Food Pantry. The main challenge, she said, will be replacing the revenue from the pantry’s thrift store, which was also destroyed in the fire.
