The impact of COVID-19 has been far more devastating on communities of color during the pandemic; that includes harsh economic challenges caused by unemployment, leaving many residents unsure where their next meal will come from. One organization is stepping up to fill the need in Newark; the “Leaders for Life” are maintaining a community fridge in the city’s South Ward to offer a lifeline for hungry neighbors.
Altarik White, who set up the community fridge, says he gets calls from people saying “I have $20,” “I have $50, I want to donate to the fridge.” These donations have helped to feed more than 600 families since the fridge opened in August. The fridge is right outside the door of Leaders for Life Academy, an alternative high school for 16- to 25-year-olds.
Support for “Hunger in NJ” has been provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
