The Colorado Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that former President Donald Trump is not qualified to hold office, resulting in the removal of his name from the state ballots for the 2024 presidential primary or general elections.
The court cited the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution that says no person shall hold any office who engaged in insurrection or rebellion, noting Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot of 2021. A similar effort to disqualify the former president from the ballot was brought before the courts in New Jersey last year by John Bellocchio, but his request was denied.
Bellocchio discusses the groundbreaking decision in an interview with NJ Spotlight News. “Now that the Colorado Supreme Court decision has come down, we have a pretty good idea of how to proceed right after Christmas,” Bellocchio said. “The New Jersey Constitution prevents those who have committed treason against the state or the United States from receiving the electoral votes of the state of New Jersey.”
