Former Gov. Chris Christie will announce his 2024 bid for the White House at a town hall event scheduled for next Tuesday in New Hampshire, a state that rejected him during his 2016 presidential run. Even as he prepares to announce another run for president, Christie is polling pretty much as he did in 2016, in single digits.

Patrick Murray, of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, said, “We know that he’s a good campaigner; he’s just not popular. In this last poll that we did, we polled 10 current and potential candidates, including Chris Christie. I think over the last four months we’ve polled about 20 different potential contenders. Christie is the only one with significant negative ratings from Republican voters. These are the people that he’s got to appeal to get the nomination … There’s no group within the Republican Party that he has a net favorable with.”

State Sen. Jon Bramnick (R-Union), a Christie supporter, said, “…you’re going to finally see someone who can go toe to toe. He’s the Mike Tyson of the Republican Party. Let’s see if Donald Trump can take a punch from someone like Chris Christie.”

“It’ll make for great popcorn moments, and we do need somebody who’s in it who has that capacity,” said Sen. Holly Schepisi (R-Bergen). “And whether he gets the nomination or not, he has an absolute place that I think is needed to put things on an even playing field.”
