A chaotic scene in Secaucus in the early hours of Sunday morning, when more than 100 cars descended on a busy intersection, escalated into a confrontation with police.
No one was injured in the incident, but police compared it to a riot and described it as a “war zone.” The Secaucus Police Department has established a task force to investigate the “car meetup” and identify those involved.
People were driving recklessly, doing donuts, while onlookers recorded the stunts, according to police. Officers who responded at the scene said they were swarmed by more than 50 people, some of whom climbed on marked vehicles, damaging them. Others launched fireworks at and under police vehicles.
A video of the incident was shared on a social media account that also recently posted about a similar meetup in an industrial area of Newark.
Two people were killed during an illegal car meetup in Wildwood in 2022.
Last year, lawmakers in the Assembly passed a bipartisan bill aimed at cracking down on similar sorts of events, but the measure stalled in the state Senate.
