The list of Democrats running in the special primary election to succeed the late Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. in the 10th Congressional District is long. Eleven in all are looking to succeed the late congressman who died in April.
The winner of the primary will compete in a special general election in September to fill the last few months of Payne’s term. The election for the subsequent full term in Congress will be in November.
“For the next congressional term, which begins on January 3, 2025, Democratic county committee members from the three counties that cover the district — Hudson, Essex and Union counties — will hold a special convention to select a new nominee to appear on the ballot in the regular general election in November,” said Assatta Mann of the Institute for Social Justice, which co-sponsored a candidate forum in Newark this week.
More than 500 people attended the forum, which was co-sponsored by the Institute for Social Justice, NJIT, the PanHellenic Council and the Newark Branch of the NAACP.
The turnout “showed that the community had a need and a want to know what the process was and to hear from the candidates themselves,” said Deborah Smith Gregory, president of NAACP-Newark.
