Women’s reproductive rights and quality affordable health care are some of the reasons that brought Marlton resident Rich Cleaver out to vote on Tuesday morning. And, while these are top issues for some voters, they’re also some of the top issues for Democratic candidates Assemblyman Herb Conaway (D-Burlington) and Assemblywoman Carol Murphy (D-Burlington.)

The former Assembly running mates are now facing off against each other for U.S. Rep. Andy Kim’s open House seat in District 3 — along with three other candidates, businesswoman Sarah Schoengood, civil rights attorney Joe Cohn and teacher Brian Schkeeper.

“The 3rd congressional district in New Jersey has gone from marginally favoring Donald Trump to a district that would favor Joe Biden by 14 points that is a strong district for Democrats,” Ben Dworkin, the director for the Institute for Public Policy and Citizenship at Rowan University, said.

The race is also considered historic because there’s an opportunity for two firsts — the first woman legislator in South Jersey or the first Black member of Congress from South Jersey. This is another race where the absent “county line” on Democratic primary ballots may be consequential.
