Can NJ grocers do more to help feed the hungry?

New bill would require some grocers donate to food banks

New Jersey is already considered a leader when it comes to combating food insecurity and hunger, but two Democratic lawmakers want it to go further and create a new pipeline for grocers to contribute their excess food to pantries and other relief facilities.

The bill would require some grocers and food suppliers to donate eligible food to local food banks and pantries.

“I think when we boil this down to a micro level: every meal we can rescue from disposal is a step towards New Jersey figuring out how we are building that sustainable future for families in need,” said state Assemblyman Bill Moen (D-Camden), one of the sponsors. “And that’s for me what this boils down to … that individual families have dinner on the table for them when they otherwise may not.”
