The Catholic Diocese of Camden has finalized the largest such settlement involving the Roman Catholic church in the U.S. Under a plan approved by a bankruptcy judge, the diocese will pay roughly $87 million to more than 300 survivors of sexual abuse by clergy.
The settlement, first announced in April 2022, was given final approval by the judge in recent days.
According to an attorney involved in the case, the agreement allows abuse survivors to sue the diocese’s insurers for additional payments. The insurers had blocked previous settlement plans. The agreement creates a trust and also allows for new child protection measures.
