Critics are calling for the state corrections commissioner and the warden at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in Hunterdon County to be placed on leave after allegations that female inmates there are being beaten by staff. State Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen), said, “We need to make sure it stops and that it stops immediately. I don’t want hear about a six-month study or anything like that; right now Marcus Hicks should be removed.” (Hicks is commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Corrections.)
A scathing 31-page report by the federal Department of Justice and U.S. Attorney’s office in April 2020 stated the facility “suffers from a culture of acceptance of sexual abuse” and had failed to keep inmates safe. State leaders reportedly have launched an investigation into the latest allegations. Correspondent Raven Santana reports.
