This year’s race for governor was closer than any of the state’s political insiders expected, with Gov. Phil Murphy hanging on to a roughly 3-point win over Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli, despite expectations of a much wider margin. But the drama was heightened on election night and the days following thanks to a slow and tedious process: counting the actual votes. Officials and lawmakers around the state are looking for ways to speed up the process in future elections.
