Business Report: Stimulus battle, Hard Rock bonuses, supporting minority-owned businesses

Americans would receive another stimulus payment, but Democrats want to see a higher $1,400 payment

The battle over more economic stimulus begins again. The U.S. Senate Tuesday set the stage for renewed negotiations on another coronavirus relief package. Democrats are proposing a $1.9 trillion package, while Republicans are backing a $618 billion plan. Americans would receive another stimulus payment under both plans, but the Democrats want to see a higher $1,400 payment. The Republicans are suggesting the payment be capped at $1,000.

A new group has been formed to help independent contractors and gig workers in New Jersey. Called the New Jersey Coalition for Independent Work, the group is composed of app-based companies like Lyft and Uber, several New Jersey business groups and faith leaders. The coalition will look to expand opportunities for gig workers and also look to improve their access to workplace benefits.

Employees of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City are getting bonuses. The company will deliver a total of $1 million in bonuses to 2,000 employees. Companies across quite a few industries, especially in retail, have given bonuses to thank employees for working during the pandemic.

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority is teaming up with the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia to study how to expand opportunities for minority-owned small businesses. The two will study how to make sure those businesses have access to funding, something that’s been a roadblock in the past.
