Help is on the way for small businesses impacted by flooding from Tropical Storm Ida. During a media briefing Wednesday, Gov. Phil Murphy announced the state has issued the first round of Economic Development Authority assistance to businesses that suffered damage and that more grant awards will be forthcoming.
A financial technology company is expanding in New Jersey. Fiserv is moving to a new location in Berkeley Heights and will add more than 1,900 new positions in the Garden State. Other jobs will be relocated there. The EDA on Wednesday approved tax credits to the company, which is pledging to invest more than $100 million in the state. The tax credits were awarded under the state’s new Emerge program.
As we continue to look toward Election Day in New Jersey, the top of the ticket is of course getting all the attention, but there is also a public question on the ballot with business implications regarding a constitutional amendment that would allow gambling on college games in the state or games in which New Jersey college teams participate. According to a Stockton University poll, 45% of those surveyed oppose the amendment while 40% support the proposal and 14% are unsure.
We are starting to see legal challenges to COVID-19 vaccine mandates. United Airlines, which has a major hub in Newark, is facing two lawsuits now. The lawsuits center on employee requests for religious or medical exemptions. United Airlines, which mandated that all 67,000 of its employees get vaccinated, says 99% have complied. But it’s in the process of firing nearly 600 workers for refusing to get vaccinated. United was one of the first big companies to mandate employee vaccinations.
