Business Report: Deadline for rent assistance, urging lower property taxes, expect Newark airport delays

People struggling to make rent payments are advised to apply to the state for help by Dec. 15

There’s an important deadline for New Jersey renters who are in need of assistance. The state Department of Community Affairs has announced that anyone struggling to make rent payments should apply to the state by Dec. 15. After that, the application window will close. Low- and moderate-income renters who apply for funds will be entered into a lottery, which the state says is an effort to fairly distribute remaining federal funds; New Jersey has distributed more than $421 million to more than 47,000 families.

A survey by the New Jersey Society of CPAs finds the biggest priority for Gov. Phil Murphy’s second term should be reducing property taxes. The group’s CEO Ralph Albert Thomas says high taxes are chasing people out of the state. CPAs say the governor should audit state agencies for overspending and waste as well as consolidate services among municipalities.

Holiday travel can be stressful and it may be even more so this year if you are flying out of Newark airport. The Transportation Security Administration says travelers should expect security delays, especially during the Thanksgiving weekend. Officials are advising people to get to the airport two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international travel. Due to ongoing renovations, some security checkpoints are closed in Terminal A. Certain flights are being shifted to Terminal B. The greatest impact is for passengers flying on American, Jet Blue, Air Canada and Alaska Airlines.
