A financially struggling New Jersey college is getting a lifeline. Bloomfield College will merge with Montclair State University. The two schools officially announced Wednesday their intention to combine, with a goal of completing the merger on or before June 30. Bloomfield College students enrolled at the time of the merger would be able to continue their education without interruption or added costs. Earlier this year, MSU extended financial support to Bloomfield College and said it was working toward an acquisition deal. Bloomfield College, a minority-serving institution, had warned that its financial difficulties could lead to its closing.
Superstorm Sandy caused billions of dollars in damage in New Jersey, where we’ve also seen billions in investments made to try to better protect the state against future storms. Ahead of the ten-year anniversary of Sandy, local officials toured a PSE&G substation in Woodbridge Wednesday to see some of the improvements made. PSEG’s Rebecca Mazzarella says the utility has spent $4.8 billon in infrastructure improvements, including raising substations that got flooded during Sandy.
Applications for the new “Anchor” property-tax relief program continue to stream in. Since the state began accepting applications last month, more than 764,000 residents have applied. You can apply for the program through late December. Meantime, the deadline is fast approaching for another property-tax relief program, the Senior Freeze.
