A South Jersey health care system is doing its part to set some high school kids on a career path. AtlantiCare launched what it calls its high school hiring blitz this month, providing seniors with jobs upon graduation. AtlantiCare extended job offers to more than 30 students, in roles that include patient care and in security, dietary and environmental services. The health care system works with teen centers — run by AtlantiCare Behavioral Health — at three South Jersey high schools. Those centers provide tutoring, employment assistance and college prep for students.
Opposition is growing to a proposed gas power plant in Woodbridge. Competitive Power Ventures is seeking to build a plant that is opposed by environmentalists and others. On Wednesday night, the Perth Amboy City Council voted in support of a resolution against the plant’s construction. According to the advocacy group Food and Water Watch, Perth Amboy joins several other municipal councils in opposing the project.
The holiday getaway is already underway. AAA projects 4.2 million drivers will use one of the bridges or tunnels between New Jersey and New York over the Memorial Day weekend. AAA believes the busiest getaway day in this area was Thursday. Meantime, another survey finds high gas prices will factor into summer travel decisions. The American Hotel and Lodging Association finds eight out of 10 travelers say gas prices will have some impact on their travel plans, with a majority saying they are likely to take fewer or shorter trips.
