Amazon has been cleared in the workplace deaths of two more warehouse employees in New Jersey. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has concluded its investigation and found there were no hazards in the Amazon warehouses that contributed to the workers’ deaths, according to a Gothamist report. The deaths occurred last July in Robbinsville and Monroe. OSHA also recently cleared Amazon in connection with a worker’s death in Carteret.

A group of 20 state legislators, along with Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, sent a letter to Gov. Phil Murphy, opposing a plan by the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, or PVSC, to put a new methane gas-fired power plant in Newark. The lawmakers ask PVSC to withdraw its permit application with the state Department of Environmental Protection, to demonstrate a good faith effort to explore alternatives. They say the environmental justice review conducted by PVSC did not include analysis of the cumulative public health impacts that would result from another power plant in Newark. In response to public opposition to the plant, PVSC modified its permit application to reduce the plant’s operating hours and stated it would try to convert the turbines to burn renewable fuels in the future.

In recent years, New Jersey has been able to address some of its tough budget issues, such as increasing contributions to the state pension system. With Murphy’s budget address a few weeks away, there’s a renewed push for the state to create a dedicated source of funding for NJ Transit.
