The City of Paterson and three surrounding suburbs remain under a boil water advisory that has been in place since Friday morning, when a massive — and ancient — 30-inch water main broke near Hinchliffe Stadium.

The Passaic Valley Water Commission, which serves the area, said Monday morning that repair work on the 140-year-old main is expected to be finished within 24 hours.

Residents of Paterson and Prospect Park are urged to boil their tap water for at least one minute before use to kill any bacteria that may be present. Haledon and North Haledon are also under a boil water advisory, as the local water company serving those towns buys water from the PVWC and is impacted by the main break.

The Passaic County Health Department has ordered all businesses serving food in the affected area to be shut down.

The PVWC, local authorities and businesses are handing out bottled water at locations across the area, with local police delivering bottled water to seniors and other people who have difficulty leaving their homes. Portable showers and toilets have also been made available.

Local authorities are urging people to conserve water in the impacted area, and said they are particularly concerned about people opening fire hydrants, which could threaten local fire departments’ abilities to respond to fires.
