President Joe Biden Thursday announced he’s pardoning all people convicted of simple marijuana possession under federal law, which would clear the records of 6,500 people. Biden said the current system “makes no sense” and he urged governors to do the same for anyone with state-level charges for marijuana possession.
The president is also calling on the federal Department of Health and Human Services to review the classification of marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug, the same classification that’s used for drugs like heroin and LSD. Marijuana has an even higher classification than that of fentanyl, the drug that’s currently driving the opioid epidemic.
