Sue Fulton, the head of the beleaguered state Motor Vehicle Commission has been nominated by President Joe Biden for a top Pentagon post — assistant secretary of defense for manpower and reserve affairs. Fulton is a West Point graduate, part of the Academy’s first-ever class to admit women, and served in the U.S. Army for six years before moving to a career in the private sector.
Fulton has been at the MVC since 2018 and recently has faced fierce criticism for the agency’s handling of backlogs and problems created by the pandemic, including infections among staff that led to dozens of shutdowns. Some customers have struggled to make appointments, leading to months of frustration.
Gov. Phil Murphy in a statement Friday called Fulton a trailblazer with the skills to empower the men and women in uniform.
