After 20 years, the state attorney general is revising policies determining how police officers use force on civilians. The biggest change, and perhaps the most controversial, includes a ban on all physical force, except as a last resort.
The new policy won’t take effect for another year, until after every officer in New Jersey completes de-escalation training. As Correspondent Leah Mishkin reports, the goal is to limit violent interactions with the public.
