The death toll in Maui has reached over 100, with more than 1,000 people still missing after the devastating wildfires that destroyed parts of the island. The need for assistance is greater than expected, and the American Red Cross and other aid organizations have been working to deliver supplies and medical care there.

“There was nothing that I can ever think to experience what they have gone through,” said Mary Sterling, a disaster services volunteer with American Red Cross New Jersey. Volunteers from New Jersey and across the country have been deployed to Maui and have worked around the clock to help those who have been hit the hardest.

As well as practical assistance, Sterling said in an interview with NJ Spotlight News, “What we really do and what we are here for with the Red Cross is to hug people … to be here with them, to stand by them, to support them and to listen to their stories.”
