Demonstrations erupted outside the U.S. Supreme Court Monday night and continued throughout Tuesday after Politico published a leaked draft of a pending majority decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, effectively ending the federal right to choose abortion. Written by conservative Justice Samuel Alito, the draft decision calls the Roe v. Wade decision “…egregiously wrong from the start,” adding, “The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision…”
Gov. Phil Murphy pointed out that New Jersey has a statutory firewall — a state law legalizing abortion. He said, “This decision will have no impact on New Jersey state law or the full right to reproductive freedom under state law.” The Supreme Court is not expected to issue an actual ruling until June.
