The desperate search for survivors of a partially collapsed condo building stretches into its sixth day in Surfside, Florida. At least 11 people are dead and 150 are unaccounted for.

The cause of the collapse is still unknown, but letters and reports have recently surfaced that raised warnings about structural damage over the years. Corrosion from salt air and water is the chief suspect so far.

Could this happen on New Jersey’s built-up coastline? In an interview with NJ Spotlight News, Matthew Bandelt, Assistant Professor of civil and environmental engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology, said, “Taking a step back, the first thing that people throughout the state of New Jersey and everywhere should realize is that buildings by and large are safe; our infrastructure is safe.”
