Another wildfire has broken out in New Jersey, this one in Washington Township in Burlington County. It comes as the state Forest Fire Service Tuesday gave a glimpse of what could be ahead this season after three major wildfires ripped through the state last week. According to data, it’s already been an unusually active year, with 517 wildfires so far burning more than 7,600 acres.

The rise in wildfires is due to weather conditions and climate factors — no snowfall in the southern half of the state, high winds, low humidity, and a warm season that’s extended by about a month on average. State officials say the three fires from last week are contained, but still smoldering. They were in Manchester, Ocean County; West Milford, Passaic County and Little Egg Harbor, also in Ocean County.
