At its height this winter, Operation Allies Welcome at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst housed some 11,000 Afghan evacuees, who were able to flee as the Taliban took back control of Afghanistan in August.
Today, the joint base in Burlington County is the last remaining military installation in the U.S. still housing Afghan evacuees. Fewer than 1,000 people remain there as they await a permanent home in the U.S. Nationwide, more than 74,000 Afghan evacuees have been resettled with the help of local resettlement agencies.
Resettlement agencies, aided by community groups, have been working double- and triple-time to place the Afghan evacuees that have come into New Jersey over the last six months, despite housing options restricted by the pandemic and Superstorm Ida. The agencies are asking for continued community support to help the evacuee families make New Jersey their home.
