A group of activists in Newark on Thursday denounced the mass shooting in a Buffalo, New York supermarket where the gunman targeted Black residents, as a “white supremacist terrorist attack.” At a press conference led by social justice advocate Larry Hamm, head of the People’s Organization for Progress, they called for state and federal action, warning something like the Buffalo shooting could happen in New Jersey — and urged the state to create a conference on racist, domestic terrorism and hate crimes.

“Our government officials at the municipal level, the county level, the state level and the federal level need to step forward and tell us what they are doing,” said Hamm. “What are their programs, what agencies have been mobilized? What funds have been allocated?”
